Nador West Med : Algeciras invests 20 million euros for three giants

The Spanish port of Algeciras is to invest 20 million euros to strengthen and deepen one of its main quays, the Juan Carlos I quay. The stated aim is to be able to accommodate three mega container ships simultaneously. This upgrade comes as Nador West Med prepares to enter service gradually on the other side of the strait.

The planned works must increase the quay’s draft and adapt the infrastructure to the latest‑generation container ships. In parallel, APM Terminals, a subsidiary of the Danish shipping group Maersk, is to acquire larger cranes. This equipment will enable the operation of the giant vessels from the northern section of the quay.

For its part, the new Moroccan port complex is to host two major container terminals operated with MSC and CMA CGM. The dynamic on both shores shows a race to adapt in order to capture the traffic of the largest vessels on the market.
